A delicate rose-gold hue in the glass, this luminous Nelson Rosé displays bright aromas of red pear and crushed cranberry. The vibrant palate of pink plum and ripe citrus is underpinned with notes of fresh fig and a subtle hint of crabapple. With just a touch of balancing sweetness this delightfully vibrant and fresh Rosé has a wonderfully long, luscious and persistent finish.
The fruit for this Rosé is sourced from their stunning Whenua Matua vineyard located in the Upper Moutere region of Nelson. This vineyard is characterised by gentle, rolling hills of clay soil with interwoven layers of gravel. The predominately north facing hillsides and warm climate provide ideal growing conditions for both Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris.
The 2021/2022 season saw warm, sunny conditions over the summer months, promoting excellent growth in the vines. Two weeks of rain in early February caused some concern, but meticulous canopy management carried out by our vineyard team earlier in the season alleviated the risk of any disease pressure affecting the ripening fruit. Expectational weather from late February made for ideal harvest conditions, with the first of the fruit picked on the 10th March.
A blend of both Nelson Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir grapes were used to make this wine. The Pinot Gris was carefully machine harvested in the early morning when the grapes were still cool, before being transported to our Marlborough winery for processing. Once at the winery the grapes were gently pressed to extract only the purest juice with minimal phenolic uptake from the skins. The juice was then settled, racked and inoculated for fermentation. A small portion of juice from a separate batch of handpicked Pinot Noir was bled off the skins (a method known as saignee) and added to the main Pinot Gris fermentation, imparting a fine blush tone and fresh red fruit flavours to the wine, with the final blend being just under 15% Pinot Noir. After a long, cool ferment lasting around 21 days, the fermentation was stopped with just enough residual sweetness to perfectly balance the fruit, acidity and fine phenolics. The wine was then lightly fined and filtered, ready for bottling in late June 2022.
