Not for big mouths. PawFetch is a small-and-medium-breed launcher — built around a 2" mini ball, not a standard tennis ball. If you have a Lab or a German Shepherd, this isn't your machine. If you have a Spaniel, a Sheltie, a small terrier, or a high-energy dog under about 25 kg, read on.
The PawFetch automatic ball launcher fires a mini tennis ball 10, 20, or 30 feet on a press of the dial. Drop a ball into the top, the motion sensor catches it, and a few seconds later the ball is on its way. Your dog brings it back, drops it in, repeat. After a session or two of training, most dogs work it out themselves and you can sit down.
The mechanism is a small plastic launcher about the size of a desktop printer (10.8 × 10.1 × 8.4 inches / 27.4 × 25.7 × 21.3 cm). Inside is a USB-rechargeable battery. On top is the loading bowl. Three mini balls ship with it. Nothing more complicated than that.
The honest size and safety note — read this first.
PawFetch fits a 2" (50mm) mini tennis ball. A standard tennis ball is 65mm — the ones in your cupboard from a tube of Wilsons or Slazengers won't fit and will jam the launcher. Replacement balls need to be the 2" mini size.
More importantly: a 50mm ball is a choking hazard for medium-to-large breeds — Labradors, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, larger Boxers, Mastiffs and similar. Their throats are wide enough to take the ball whole. We do not recommend PawFetch for any dog over about 25 kg, and not for any dog with a history of swallowing toys whole. If that's your dog, please don't buy this product.
For the right dog — Spaniels, Shelties, small terriers, Frenchies, Cavaliers, Beagles, mini Schnauzers, Cockapoos, smaller Whippets, Border Collies on the lighter end, and any high-energy small-to-medium dog who has too much fetch in them for one human arm — PawFetch is what we'd actually buy. So this is the page we wrote.
Why a launcher beats a person
- The throw is consistent. Same arc, same distance, every time. Dogs read the rhythm and start anticipating — which is part of the fun.
- Your shoulder gets to stop. A typical fetch session for a high-drive small dog runs 30–90 minutes. Your rotator cuff was not built for that.
- It teaches drop on cue. The dog quickly learns the only way to make the ball go again is to drop it back in the loader. Side-effect: a much cleaner "drop" command.
How it works in practice
The launcher has a small motion sensor on the front rim. Drop a ball into the open bowl on top, the sensor catches it, and after a short delay the launcher fires. The delay is built-in — it gives the dog a moment to back up so they're not standing on the firing line.
You set the distance with the dial: 10ft for indoors or a tight garden, 20ft for the average lawn, 30ft for a park or longer green. The arc is fairly low — this is a flatter launcher than an over-the-shoulder throw, which means the ball lands further out for the same setting than you'd expect.
Battery is USB-rechargeable. Run time on a full charge is enough for several sessions before it needs plugging back in. We're confirming the exact figure with the supplier and will update the listing — if you need an authoritative number before buying, drop us a message.
The training week
Almost no dog uses this correctly on day one. The mistake everyone makes is expecting the dog to drop the ball back into the loader by themselves the first time. They don't. They drop it on the floor next to the launcher, or they bring it to you, or they sit there with it in their mouth waiting for you to throw it.
The fix is a week of supervised training. Sit by the launcher. Take the ball from the dog. Drop it in the loader yourself. Watch the dog watch the launcher fire. Repeat. By day three or four, most dogs are dropping the ball into the loader without prompting because they've worked out it's the only thing that makes the ball go again. Then you can sit down.
Some dogs never quite get it on their own — usually older dogs, very young puppies, or dogs who've never played fetch before. That's a normal training outcome, not a fault with the launcher.
Indoors or out
Outdoor is what this is built for. A 30ft launch in your living room is a recipe for a broken vase, and the rebound off a wall startles most dogs. Use the 10ft setting indoors, in a long hallway or open kitchen-diner, on a soft floor (carpet, rug, washable mat) — and keep an eye on the trajectory the first time.
For garden and park use, point the launcher away from fences, walls, and any neighbour's window. The arc is shallow, so a 30ft setting can carry surprisingly far if there's a slope or a tailwind.
An honest note on the balls. The three mini balls in the box are standard fluffy tennis-ball fabric on a hollow rubber core. The fuzz is mildly abrasive on dental enamel — the same as any tennis ball. If your dog is a serial chewer who'll sit and grind a ball for half an hour after fetch is over, take it off them when the session ends. Tennis balls aren't designed for chewing; they're designed for chasing.

Will my Labrador / Golden / German Shepherd be safe with this?
Honestly — no, and we don't recommend it. The 50mm mini ball is small enough to be a choking hazard for medium-to-large breeds. PawFetch is a small-and-medium-dog product. If you have a Lab or any dog over about 25 kg, please look at a launcher built for standard 65mm tennis balls instead.
Can I use the regular tennis balls I already have?
No. The regular tennis balls in your cupboard are 65mm and won't fit the loader — they jam the mechanism. PawFetch only works with 2" (50mm) mini tennis balls. Replacement mini balls are sold separately.
Will my dog actually learn to use it?
Most fetch-trained small-to-medium dogs work it out within a week of supervised training. Sit next to the launcher, take the ball from the dog, drop it into the loader yourself, watch the launcher fire, repeat. After a few days they're loading it themselves. Older dogs and puppies sometimes don't get it — that's a training outcome, not a faulty product.
How long does the battery last?
Long enough for several full fetch sessions on a charge — we're confirming the exact run time and charge time with the supplier and will update the listing once we have it in writing. If you need an authoritative figure before buying, message us and we'll come back to you.
Is it waterproof? Can I leave it out in the rain?
No. The launcher is splash-resistant — a few raindrops mid-session won't kill it — but the battery, motor and motion sensor are not sealed against water ingress. Bring it in after each session and don't leave it out overnight. Wipe down with a damp cloth, never hose.
Can I use it indoors?
Use the 10ft setting indoors only, on soft flooring, with a clear line of sight away from anything fragile. The 30ft setting is an outdoor-only setting. Mind the trajectory the first time you fire it — the arc is shallower than an over-the-shoulder throw.
Is it really safe for my dog's teeth?
The mini balls are standard tennis-ball fabric — same fuzz as any tennis ball, mildly abrasive on enamel over time. Fine for chasing and fetching. Not for sustained chewing. Take the ball away after the session ends — tennis balls aren't built to be chewed long-term.
