A stirring account of the covert effort to smuggle Cuban children into the United States in the aftermath of Fidel Castro's rise to power, Fleeing Castro brings to light the humanitarian program designed to care for the children once they arrived and the hardship and suffering endured by the families who took part in Operation Pedro Pan. From late 1960 until the October 1962 missile crisis, 14,048 unaccompanied Cuban children left their homeland, the small island suddenly at the center of the Cold War struggle. Their parents, unable to obtain visas to leave Cuba, believed a short separation would be preferable to subjecting their offspring to Castro's totalitarian Marxist state. For the children, the exodus began a prolonged and tragic ordeal--some didn't see their parents again for years; a few never did. Until now, this chapter of the Cuban Revolution has been relatively obscure. Initially the result of an effort by James Baker, headmaster of an American school in Cuba who worked closely with the anti-Castro underground, Pedro Pan quickly came to involve the Catholic Church in Miami and, in particular, Father Bryan Walsh, who established the Cuban Children's Program, the nationwide organization that cared for those children without relatives or friends in the United States--almost half of them. The latter program, in effect until 1981, was the first to allot federal money to private agencies for child care, an action with far-reaching repercussions for U.S. social policy. Victor Andres Triay traces this story from its political and social origins in Cuba, setting it in the context of the Cold War and describing the roles of the organizations involved in Cuba and in the United States. Making use of extensive interviews with Baker, Walsh, and influential underground figures, as well as personal letters that document the fears and dreams of both the parents and the children, Triay presents this history of Pedro Pan--the largest child refugee movement ever in the Western Hemisphere--with the drama of an international thriller and the pathos of a heartbreaking family drama.Binding Type: Paperback

Happy with my purchase
Style: Industrial / Rustic, Style: Industrial / Rustic
These shelves are fantastic! The quality is excellent, assembly was quick and easy, and they look great once installed. They have a much more expensive appearance than their price suggests. I’m very happy with my purchase and would highly recommend them.

Great sturdy shelf, install can be a bit challenging
Style: 3 Tier with Tower Bar, Style: 3 Tier with Tower Bar
The shelf is great and does exactly what I wanted it to do. I will note that the instructions indicate you’re supposed to use a 6 mm drillbit to install the anchors which comes out to about a 15/64 size. I would recommend a quarter inch drillbit because I was really struggling to get those anchors in there.
Several folks also said that it’s easiest to install with two people, but you don’t need two people if you have some way to prop the piece up while you’re marking the hole placements to drill (and I would definitely recommend having a level on it the entire time you’re working to make sure that it’s correct).
Lastly, it is easiest to put it together first, and then mark the drill holes, put the piece aside and drill and install the anchors, and then screw it in. I will also caution folks to not overtighten the pipe connections, because the pipes will end up in a wonky direction in the end.
Overall I am extremely happy with this piece and certainly for the price!!

Easy to put together. Super cute in any room
Style: 3 Tier
I fell in love with these when we were at our kids home and we installed them for them. The way my daughter-in-law decorated them, I loved it. I ordered 3 of them. I ordered a two tier for my office, because the 3 tier was too big, and i have the 3 tier in my bathroom. They look so dang cute and finishes up the wall in those areas. They are sturdy and strong. Super easy to put together. No tools required, except when you need to hang them. It will require two people to hang them. You can put them together in less than 5 minutes. Not super heavy but strong. strong to hold several things on them. I had no parts missing. Everything came packaged very nicely. Very functional. I would definitely recommend.

Shelf
Style: 2-tier Vintage Industrial
I’m giving a 4 star due to installation. Screws were too small for the anchors. Shelf is very nice and looks great . Took little more time than what should have been an easy hang .
