ᝰ THE STORY
Samsara—the eternal cycle of life, death, and rebirth—finds its reflection in the rhythmic dance of rice cultivation, a tradition that has shaped Indonesia for over 8,000 years. As generations pass, the land remains, its surface etched with the footprints of those who have toiled before, their knowledge flowing like an unbroken river into the hands of the present.
This photograph captures the infinite repetition of that cycle. Cascading rice terraces stretch endlessly, folding into the contours of the earth, their patterns mirroring the flow of time itself. In their midst, an old farmer moves with quiet familiarity, his bare feet pressing into the damp soil, carrying a wooden pole hung with smaller branches—perhaps gathered as fuel for the evening fire. His presence is effortless, as though he has always been here, as though he belongs to the land as much as the rice itself.
Despite the rapid changes sweeping across the archipelago, agriculture remains the lifeblood of countless villages. Yet, as younger generations drift toward the cities, the burden of cultivation rests increasingly on the elders, their hands weaving the last threads of a disappearing way of life.
The rice paddies in this image shimmer with fresh growth, alternating between flooded fields and tender new shoots, a testament to the land’s fertility—an earth that has nourished countless lives and will continue to do so for those who remain. Here, time is not linear but circular, each harvest folding into the next, just as the old give way to the young.
Samsara is not just a photograph—it is a meditation on continuity, a living tableau of an Indonesia that endures, ever-repeating, ever-renewing, bound to the land and its unbroken rhythm.
