Chaque joueur est un marchand qui essaie de supplanter les autres. À tour de rôle, chacun lance le dé puis déplace Assam, l'organisateur de la vente. Si Assam s'arrête sur un tapis adverse, le marchand doit payer une dîme à son propriétaire avant de poser un de ses tapis sur un espace adjacent. Quand le dernier tapis est posé, on totalise les tapis visibles et la somme détenue par chacun des marchands: le meilleur l'emporte.
