Description:
The first bikes to have the Eddy Merckx logo were the Eddy Merckx Kessel bikes in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Even the champion himself rode them. The Vaneenooghe family, a small manufacturer, was one of the few who produced for Kessels in the early days. Later in the 1980s, they made bikes for the professional team Splendor, with riders such as Sean Kelly, Eddy Planckaert and others. Our boiler was made by the experts at Vaneenooghe, and you can tell because it has a 'Compass' sticker on the fork.
The Dutch clothing chain C&A set up the Belgian cycling team C&A in 1978. They set up the team especially for the famous Belgian cyclist Eddy Merckx. At the time, Merckx was struggling in the sport, but he was still attracting sponsors. Because of this, C&A only wanted to be involved in a cycling team with Eddy. The team was partly a continuation of the Fiat France cycling team, which had left. As well as Eddy, five other Belgian cyclists also came from the Fiat team. The team also included several experienced Belgian cyclists and new talent.
It was a completely Belgian cycling team. The German team manager was Rudi Altig. The whole team and staff were Belgian, with riders such as Joseph Bruyère, Guido Van Calster, Ward Janssens, the Planckaert brothers, the king of the mountains Lucien Van Impe, Jos Deschoenmaecker and Ludo Loos. The team won 17 races, including a stage at the Tour de France.
After many years at the top, Eddy's best years were behind him. It was difficult for him to keep going. On 19 March 1978, Merckx rode in his last official cycling race, the 'Omloop van het Waasland' in Kemzeke. Eddy was then team boss of the C&A cycling team for a short time.
The bike was recently overhauled and is therefore in great condition. A bike for true Eddy Merckx fans. It's perfect for vintage cycling events. It's also a real head-turner wherever you take it.
